About Scooters

Most scooters have swivel seats, can go up to about 5 miles an hour, and have a weight capacity of 300 pounds. Select models are available that can carry up to 450 pounds.

Choosing the style and color of the scooter you want is the fun part. But first, you should determine what size and type of scooter you need. Scooters fall into one of three base sizes, small medium and large, with three or four wheels.

Smaller based scooters are easier to disassemble, have tighter turning surfaces, and come with eight-inch tires. They should be driven on primarily flat surfaces, whether that’s outside or indoors. The heaviest component of a smaller scooter is 24 lbs, making it easier to place in a car trunk.

Medium scooters have nine-inch tires, and can be driven on light gravel surfaces and in standard yards. The heaviest component is 38 lbs.

Large-based scooters have ten-inch tires, and can handle rougher terrain, including rural areas. Like medium scooters, the heaviest component is 38 lbs.

Four wheeled scooters provide the most stability for outdoor driving. They’re wider in the front, generally longer, and the turning radius is larger. The size and turning radius makes it a bit more difficult for use indoors.

Three wheeled scooters are usually smaller, with a tighter turning radius, which makes it better suited for use indoors. Because of their smaller size, they’re not good for a variety of rugged terrains. If you’ll be using your scooter mostly in the home or for shopping, a three-wheel scooter may be just fine for you.

The steering tiller on scooters varies by model, especially in how it can be moved toward the driver. Some scooters have three-position tillers, while others have infinite possibilities.

Additional features such as headlights, baskets and cane or walker holders are included on some models, or available as optional accessories on others. For a complete list of accessories for your scooter, ask your MediEquip representative.

Batteries

All scooters are battery operated. A full charge on a small scooter will last up to 10 miles, while most larger scooters will last approximately 20 to 25 miles.

Batteries are sealed and encased in a weatherproof container. The size and number of batteries depends on the base size of the scooter.

When the batteries begin to run low, the charger indicator light on the scooter will let you know. To recharge, you simply plug the cord that comes with each unit into a standard electrical outlet. You should allow eight hours for a full charge. The scooter will automatically shut off once the charge is complete.

Travel

You can go anywhere you want to go with your scooter with easy disassembly or an auto lift.

Most scooters can be broken down into five pieces: the seat, front, back, and two batteries. You can then easily place the parts into the trunk of an average car or SUV. When you get where you going, assembly is a snap, and you’re on your way in a matter of minutes.

With the addition of an auto lift, you can load your scooter into your car, van or truck with the push of a button. Ramps are also available. Your MediEquip representative will be happy to give you a demonstration on one of our in-store interactive displays.

Auto lifts are specific to the type of car you drive, and are priced accordingly. Most automobile manufacturers have rebates up to one thousand dollars for lifts if the vehicle has been purchased in the last year. MediEquip has certified installers on hand to help answer any questions, and help you complete any necessary paperwork. If you purchase a scooter from MediEquip, we’ll give you fifteen percent off any auto lift.

Warranties

Warranties vary according to manufacturer. Most motors and electronic parts are covered by a three-year pro-rated warranty. A lifetime warranty is offered on the frame of the scooter. Should your scooter need repairs during the warranty period, your only cost will be for labor.

All scooters come with a warranty card that needs to be mailed into the manufacturer. Your MediEquip representative will help you complete this card at time of purchase so your scooter can get registered right away.

Service

If you have any problem with your scooter, simply contact MediEquip. Our mobility technicians will diagnose the problem, work with the manufacturers and make any necessary repairs. Quick and professional service is just a phone call away.

Insurance

Unfortunately, most insurance companies do not cover scooters because they are primarily used for community access, not for mobility needs around the home. Insurance companies usually focus on products for in-home use, and in such cases a power wheelchair would be more suitable. If the customer’s condition necessitates a power chair, it would be a covered benefit. If this applies to you, your MediEquip representative will be happy to show you our line of power wheelchairs.

Prices

Prices on scooters vary greatly according to the model and available options. Standard pricing ranges from eight hundred ninety-five dollars to about three thousand dollars.

Some Questions

So, you’re ready to get a scooter? To help you pick the one that’s right for you, ask yourself the following questions:

Where will you be driving the scooter, indoors or outdoors, or both? And what kind of terrain is involved? If mostly indoors, you can go with a smaller three-wheeled scooter. If you’ll be using it outdoors on a variety of surfaces, you’ll probably want a larger four-wheeled scooter for more stability with rough terrains.

What time of day will you be driving your scooter? If at night, you’ll want to make sure a headlight is available for the scooter you select.

Will you be carrying packages or a walking aid with you? If so, you’ll need a basket or walker holder on your scooter.

Will you be taking your scooter on the road? If you plan on using your scooter at the mall, park, or anywhere away from your home, you’ll need to decide whether you want to disassemble the scooter to fit in your trunk, or whether you need a lift to help you get the scooter into your car, van or truck.

We’ll be able to help you with all of these questions and more when you come in for a test drive.
